Part of the CodeScience origin story goes back to 2009 with a phone call to a Salesforce.org account executive, Bryan Breckenridge. We were already believers in Marc Benioff’s values that instilled giving into the corporate culture; on brand, Bryan responded, “I’ll give you seven referrals today. And I’ll give you seven more every time you call back. There is one catch — I’ll need you to pledge that your company will always work with not-for-profits and give back to the community when you can.”

I agreed and those original referral clients became some of the stories we still tell 10 years later. We have been fortunate to support some of the largest not-for-profits in the world, including Grameen Foundation, Easterseals, Easterseals Bay Area, Make-a-Wish Foundation, Cornell University, VisionSpring, and more. In fact, our work with Easterseals Bay Area is often featured by Salesforce for their incredible success using Salesforce Health Cloud to power their long-term care outreach.

CodeScience has also donated time and support to worthy causes like Bike MS: Waves to Wine, Girls Inc., STEM School of Chattanooga, World Reader, Carolina Crown, and more.

This year, our CEO Brian Walsh called out that we could do more to keep with our original company values. I jumped on the suggestion, and today I am happy to join Pledge 1%’s network of founders, entrepreneurs and companies around the globe that have committed to giving back.

Pledge 1% aims to create a new standard in which giving back is part of a company’s DNA, regardless of size. Individuals and companies have the option to pledge 1% in the form of equity, profit, product, and/or time to causes of their choosing. To date, over 3,000 companies in 80 countries have joined the movement, including Twilio, Glassdoor, Box, Yelp, General Assembly, Docusign, Salesforce, Atlassian, Techstars — and now CodeScience!

CodeScience has committed to pledging 1% of profit to our community. I look forward to our company collectively identifying the causes we will support and further expanding the impact we can make on our community.

Our pledge is on behalf of our entire organization, falling in line with our culture, values, and beliefs. It has always been, and continues to be, a core part of our identity. We encourage our clients to join us in this pledge. For more information about Pledge 1%, visit www.pledge1percent.org.
